New Carpet Recycling Law in New York

Last year the New York State government finalized a new carpet recycling law.

Here’s the most important thing to know now: Whatever carpet you select moving forward will likely need to be recycled when you rip it out. To comply with the State in the future, it is important now to start considering the recyclability and recycled content of any carpet selections. GP Flooring is on top of this issue, and we are happy to help!

Other important facts on this law:

2026 implementation
Originally written to take effect this year, the implementation was postponed to July 2026 to allow for much-needed research, planning, and ramp-up.

75% Recycling Target in 15 Years
The new law mandates that manufacturers must recycle 75% of discarded carpet within 15 years of the program's initiation. By comparison, since California enacted a similar law about a decade ago, they achieved a record recycling rate of 34% in 2022.

30% Recycled Content within 5 Years
Within the first five years, all carpets sold in the state must contain at least 30% recycled content.
