How To Keep Carpets Clean

Flooring in office

Keeping your facility clean while protecting and maintaining your floors is important. However, it’s not always clear how best to do that. Here are five tips on how to keep carpets clean in your commercial facility and protect your carpet investment.

  1. Be sure to use a vacuum cleaner with a beater bar, which helps scrub the carpet and raise soil particles up and out of the carpet.

  2. Use “encapsulation cleaning” periodically to remove deep-down particles and oils. This process involves polymers that are applied to the carpet fibers, breaking down dirt and soil particles that are extracted easily by a vacuum cleaner that has beater bars. Quick-drying time is a bonus — foot traffic is allowed almost immediately, which means your facility will have little downtime.

  3. Use walk-off matting in vestibule and lobby areas so dirt and moisture are removed from footwear before reaching internal carpet or hard-surface areas. Walk-off matting can reduce up to 98% of debris from shoes, which prevents it from tracking onto your flooring and causing damage.

  4. In addition to quickly blotting (not rubbing) a stain, be sure to clean it from the outside of the stain toward the center to prevent spreading the stain. This can prevent costly maintenance down the line.

  5. If you have any snags or loose fibers in your carpet, don’t pull on them because that may damage the carpet. Instead, cut the strand at the height of the rest of the carpet. This will help maintain the appearance of your carpet and avoid untimely replacements.

And when all else fails and the carpet needs to be replaced, opt for carpet with high-quality, stain-resistant fibers that will last.
